Fernando, our new phD student tutor from Mexico: "So, err, what I like to do is to make sure everyone knows why they are taking Norse because I am Mexican and people are, err, curious whenever I say I am involved in old Norse. So, ahem, let's go round the room."
Female two down on my right: "I take Norse..uhm...because I'm really interested in all the, y'know, the sagas. And Anglo-Saxon. Yeah."
Female with a broken finger, opposite : "Well, I went to Iceland when I was 15 and that got me fascinated what with all the manuscripts."
Male on my right: "Yeah, I thought it was really different and I wanted to do something...heh, well, really different."
Scandinavian actually quite reminiscent of a Viking himself: "I'm a Language...a Linguistics student. So I do all the ancient languages and I like Norse."
Myself: "I went to the old Language department last year to do French and they wanted a cheque for £80. On my way to get my chequebook, I found out you could take Norse for free a whole year later so I just never went back."
That, and I wanted to learn how to swear in secret.
